Helping to serve your community, Chris Evans MP Help Shape Britains Progressive Future

30th March 2017 - Islwyn MP hits out at ‘unfair’ TV licence extra charges

‘The UK must act to end the crisis in Yemen’, says Islwyn MPThe MP for Islwyn, Chris Evans, has expressed his shock and disappointment after learning those who pay for their licence fee in quarterly instalments are charged more.

At a Public Accounts Committee oral evidence session, Mr Evans asked the The BBC Licence Fee Unit’s Head of Revenue Management, Pipa Doubtfire, how much money is made from a premium charged to those who buy their TV license quarterly rather than yearly.

Ms. Doubtfire admitted that the total amount extra collected from those who pay the premium, which is £5 per year, was ‘about £16 million’.

Mr Evans said: ‘How can it be fair that those who pay for their TV license every quarter rather than every year pay an additional premium? They receive the exact same service as everyone else.

‘Some of those affected by this are likely to be vulnerable people who should not have to pay this extra amount.

‘I am shocked and disappointed that the BBC charges customers differently depending on the way TV licenses are paid for. I would urge them to reconsider this practice.’
