11th October 2017 - Fears raised Wales could be a dumping ground for radioactive Mud

Fears Raised Wales could be a Dumping Ground for Radioactive Mud At a recent meeting of the Public Accounts Committee, Islwyn MP Chris Evans has raised concerns about plans to dump up to 300,000 tonnes of mud from Hinkley Point just off the Welsh coast in Cardiff.

In 2013, EDF Energy were granted a license by Natural Resources Wales to deposit mud from the seabed by nuclear plant Hinkley Point, to an area in the Bristol Channel just outside of Cardiff. Despite receiving Government approval, independent assessors claim that the tests conducted on the mud to measure radioactivity were not extensive enough.

Concerns have been raised that radioactive particles from the mud could potentially wash up on shore. As it stands, over 4,600 people have signed a petition to the Welsh Government to revoke the license.

Alex Chisholm, the Permanent Secretary at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, was questioned by Mr Evans about the Government’s plans to address the concerns of residents. Mr Chisholm said he would write to Evans and the Public Accounts Committee regarding the issue, as he was unable to give a full answer during the inquiry.

Speaking after the inquiry, Mr Evans said: ‘The Government must reconsider their plans to dump potentially radioactive mud outside of Cardiff. They must listen to the independent assessors and run more thorough tests on the mud’s radioactivity, if only to ease the concerns of residents in the affected areas.

‘I look forward to hearing the Government’s response. It is not fair on the residents of Cardiff and the wider South Wales coast to live with the worry of potentially dangerous matter surrounding their homes. The UK Government must work alongside the Welsh Government on this matter, to ensure that human health and the environment are prioritised and fully protected.’
